It’s not a good film

Tale

Julie is a star at an elite tennis academy. When her coach is investigated and suddenly suspended, all the players at the club are encouraged to speak out. But Julie decides to keep quiet.. Belgium’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.. It’s still a pretty good story. But the script could have been changed. It’s like they had a few scenes in mind and then just worked on them.

Why is he silent?

There are some good scenes (the one with the bar confrontation comes to mind), but it’s not enough to keep things afloat. All the actors are at the top of their game. Above all, the young semi-pro tennis player who plays Julie. She really does her best with the material she’s given. But even that’s not enough. There are too many unanswered questions: What really happened between Julie and Jeremy? One moment she has a problem with the new trainer, and the next she will be trained only by him (I mean, what the hell…?) So, from a story perspective, it’s just a big FAIL!

The lighting is non-existent

But here’s my biggest problem with this movie. This director really doesn’t know how to make a movie!! The framing is just wrong. There were shadows everywhere. In one scene you can only make out two silhouettes talking to each other. He never cuts a scene between different subjects. It’s like they only had one camera available.

But to me it was just so annoying

Now maybe (and I’m just guessing) he thinks this brings peace and quiet to his movie. And if you decide not to have cuts in your movie, make sure you stick to one key shot and let us (the audience) look and look where we want/need. No, this director decides for himself, we don’t need this information. So in many scenes we see people talking to other people whose heads are (half) cut off or you can only make out half of their faces. What do they teach in film schools these days??!! Also, was this movie shot on an iPhone??!! When I saw that Nikolas Karakatsanis was the cinematographer, my jaw dropped!

And that’s fine

He really made a pun. It was just unwatchable at times. To me, this all comes down to one of two things: either this director doesn’t know the basics of filmmaking, or he just doesn’t care. Maybe he just wants to tell his stories. But film is a visual medium. And here they just got it wrong. And I, as a paying customer, want more.
